Some interesting notes on design

For some, building parts of OS/161 may be the most challenging design project you have ever undertaken. Learning how to design things is hard. There are good practice and rules of thumb, but you learn best by doing, reflecting, and doing better. Here are a few short writings on various aspects of the design process. Feel free to suggest others to me and I'll add them.

• On the Criteria To Be Used in Decomposing Systems into Modules This is a highly cited software engineering paper on design.
• Exercises in Software Design. This related to the previous paper and discusses a series of design exercises. I believe that you can access the link if you are on a Harvard network.
